Metal thief is caught in the act by a farmer

A MANSFIELD man was given a community order after being caught trying to steal scrap metal from a farm.

Mansfield Magistrates’ Court was told how Freddy Whaley (44), of Victoria Street, had loaded the rear of his mother’s tipper truck with materials from the Soolkholme Road farm, on 22nd August.

Neil Hollett, prosecuting, said: “Staff placed a tractor in front of the gate and police were called.

“The defendant told police he was approached by the owner and threw the metal on the floor.”

A probation officer said Whaley, who admitted theft during the hearing last Wednesday, had cooperated well with a previous order.

He was given 150 hours unpaid work and ordered to complete a thinking skills course.
