Men from Mansfield and Warsop jailed for metal pole attack

Two men have been jailed for using a metal pole and wooden broom handle to beat a man in Warsop after a falling-out.

The victim suffered three fractured fingers and needed stitches to the back of his head.

Shane Betteridge (27), of Bolsover Street, Mansfield, and William Green, also 27, of Meden Avenue, Warsop, were both sentenced to 16 months at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday.

They admitted assaulting Peter Bernard causing him actual bodily harm outside Green’s mother’s house in Meden Avenue on 13th August last year.

The victim had been friends with Green and had stayed at the house, said Jim Metcalf. prosecuting.

But the men fell out after the victim blamed Green for some of his personal property going missing.

Text messages were exchanged and on the day of the attack the victim had gone back to collect the last of his belongings.

Green was holding a six-foot metal pole, said the victim, so he fetched a wheelbrace from the boot of his car.

The victim said he used his forearm to block a blow from the pole but was felled from behind. Both accused then set about him, the court was told.

The weapons were later found with the victim’s blood on them. The injured man had to give up his jobs as a DJ and welder.

Kathryn Duff, for Green, said it was not a pre-meditated attack and was a case of excessive self-defence.
