Lewis Williams was bullied in his early years and left with injuries on occasions.

The bullying got worse until it reached a point where Lewis’s own behaviour became destructive, hitting out at those attacking him and missing classes at school.

Unfortunately, he then mixed with a wrong crowd and was falsely accused of a crime.

This was the turning point for Lewis, who decided it was time to take control

And following his hard work and determination, along with support from friends and staff from the youth service, he has now been nominated for a Nottinghamshire County Council 4Uth award.

Councillor Liz Plant, of the council’s children and young people’s committee, said: “We are all proud of Lewis.

“He was in a dark place, but, throug his own determination and support from others, he has been able to build a more positive future.”

Youth workers Irfaan Hussain, Deb Jackson and Rose Devereux, who nominated Lewis for the awards, said the 14-year-old stays behind to catch up with missed school work, and has been attending the youth mobile service on Mansfield’s Oak Tree estate for more than a year.

They said he helps with setting up, takes a lead role in the sports activities and helps inform staff about the needs of young people in the area.

Lewis is just one of many young people who have already been nominated for the 2016 awards.

The annual 4Uth awards recognise the achievements of young people across the county for a variety of different areas such as outstanding achievement, caring for others, vital contribution within a local community and overcoming adversity.

Young stars who have been nominated will be profiled on social media networks such as Twitter and Instagram.

Nominations are open now until June 10.

District youth panels will then shortlist three top nominees and select winners who will then receive their awards at a ceremony at County Hall on October 28.
