Mansfield’s Blockbuster store could close
Blockbuster, Portland Retail Park, Mansfield
MANSFIELD’S High Street has been dealt another blow after DVD and video games rental firm blockbuster became the latest retailer to go into administration.
Across the UK the company has 528 stores and 4,190 staff including several workers at the Mansfield branch on the Portland Retail Park.
The branch is continuing to trade as administrators Deloitte try to find a buyer in the coming weeks.
The news follows the collapse of photographic store Jessops and the move into administration of entertainment retailer HMV.
Blockbuster has suffered over the last 10 years due to the increasing popularity of downloading and streaming of DVDs and games, but Deloitte says the core business is profitable.
Chad tried unsuccessfully to speak to employees from Blockbuster this week but former staff member David Palmer contacted us on Facebook to give his views.
“I worked at the Blockbuster in Mansfield for three or four years a while back and I can honestly say I haven’t been back to buy or rent since,” he said.
“I knew they were in trouble back then because of Love Film and iTunes film rentals.
“They didn’t keep up with the times and are now paying the price for it. It’s a shame so many will lose their jobs as it was a cracking place to work, I feel bad for all the staff there.”
Ash Kirk added: “I imagine a lot more High Street shops will be shutting down over the next few years.”
Lee Manning, joint administrator and partner at Deloitte, said: “Blockbuster has faced increased competition from, internet based providers along with the shift to digital streaming of movies and games.
“We’re working with suppliers and employees to ensure the business has the best possible platform to secure a sale, preserve jobs and generate as much value as possible.”
