Liberty Blythe pupil at Brunts school gets ready for her teaching trip to Malawi

A BRUNTS Academy pupil has been selected to spend a year teaching in Malawi - and is now appealing for help raising funds for the project.

Libby Blythe (17) is currently studying her A-levels but needs to raise £5,400 to take part in the scheme with the organisation Project Trust.

So far, the teenager has raised £130 at a school cake sale and with the help of other donations she has passed the £400 mark.

She has to raise £3,500 by Easter and find the rest in time for the trip in August 2013.

Libby has started an online blog so friends and family can follow her progress and help her reach the target.

Apart from being worried about creepy-crawlies, Libby hopes it will be an amazing experience.

She said: “I have always wanted to go to Africa and try to help people and then I found out about this fantastic opportunity with Project Trust.

“I am going to be teaching English to African children, to hopefully boost their life prospects, and hopefully helping in an orphanage.

“I feel this is very worthwhile, and I have to raise £5,400. This will go on insurances - medical and luggage, my accommodation whilst out there, food, plane flights. The list of things I need is endless.”

Libby was chosen for the project after taking part in a week-long selection course with The Project Trust on the Isle of Coll in Scotland.

Libby has a few other fundraising ideas up her sleeve including Christmas concert.

She said: “I’ve also decided to do a ‘sponsor a day’ which means, people pay for a particular day they choose, and then I send them a postcard to tell them all about the day that they’ve paid for.

“The idea has already taken off and I’ve had one person already pay for two days and a few friends already putting their name down on certain dates.

“I also have an idea to do a sponsored friendsathon, and a sponsored sing, and a fundraising concert, so hopefully I’ll be able to get all my ideas up and running.”

Her cousin Callum has just donated £100 to celebrate passing his Paratrooper training.

After the year-long trip, Libby will go to university to study English history and literature.
