A MANSFIELD school has re-opened its doors after the summer holidays with a new name and a promise to help pupils reach their potential.

The former Newgate Lane Primary School is now called the Mansfield Primary Academy and is sponsored by the Greenwood Dale Foundation Trust (GDFT), which has academies across the country.

The school’s former interim headteacher, Fran Gillam, will remain in charge at the new academy, which will cater for up to 204 pupils aged from three to 11.

Lynda Valentine, executive principal from the GDFT, said: “I am confident that the new academy will make a significant contribution towards raising achievement for children in the Ravensdale and Portland areas of Mansfield.”

Newgate Lane Primary was taken out of special measures by Ofsted in November 2010 after inspectors found teaching and learning had improved.

It will now become one of seven new academies joining the GDFT this September, taking the total number to 12. Its chief executive Barry Day said: “We are committed to building on the success of the former school to ensure pupils have the opportunity to reach their full potential, with no limit to what they can achieve.”

The GDFT’s operational arm will employ all staff and manage finances and other central services. Academies have been criticised by teachers’ unions for failing to provide the freedom they promised.
