MANSFIELD Museum could be in-line for a £304,000 boost after the council agreed to accept a grant to develop a new industrial gallery.

The grant from The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) was accepted by Mansfield District Council at their full council meeting last week.

Due to a technical issue, further consideration now needs be given to the contract terms and a decision will re-taken as soon as possible.

But if the money is secured, the centre piece for the project will be a permanent exhibition in the arcade gallery which will champion the area’s industrial heritage.

It will feature artefacts relating to Metal Box, Shoe Co, Mansfield Brewery, Barrs Soft Drinks, hosiery, precision engineering, mining, foundries and quarrying.

The permanent galleries at the museum have not been renewed for over eight years and it is hoped the new gallery will make a ‘dramatically enhanced’ entrance to the Leeming Street venue.

The full project , which extends over five years, will cost £467,700 which the council will make up through volunteer hours equivalent to £153,700.

The remainder of the cash will come from the museum’s budgets and sponsorship from local businesses.

Designers will be appointed through the council’s procurement procedures, work on the project could begin by the end of this summer with a planned opening in spring 2014.

Councillor Kate Allsop, portfolio holder for economic regeneration at the district council, thinks the project will be exciting for the town.

She told the full council meeting: “It is wonderful to get this money. I’m so pleased we have got an opportunity to make all of this available for people who live in Mansfield and those people who visit Mansfield.
