MANSFIELD MP, Sir Alan Meale, has been officially knighted by Prince Charles during a special ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

Sir Alan travelled to the capital for the Palace investiture after he received his award in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to politics and the public.

Speaking after the ceremony, the MP said: “Such ceremonies are always a bit of a worry for everyone attending.

“But now it is over I wish to repeat my dedication of being awarded this honour to all my constituents who are or have worked in public service, especially (Mansfield soldier) Tay Cheeseman who lost his life whilst serving the country as a member of our Armed Forces.

“I wish also to thank the many constituents who have expressed their best wishes to me and my family in connection with the award.”

Sir Alan became the Labour MP for Mansfield in 1987 and was the party’s front bench whip from 1992-1994.

He was also Parliamentary Private Secretary to former Deputy Labour leader, John Prescott, from 1994 to 1997.

In addition, Sir Alan is a former member of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and works closely with the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association.

Sir Alan will once again be taking part in the annual Big Snore to raise money for homelessness charity Framework at Mansfield’s St Mark’s Church on 3rd February.
