Mansfield man was carrying craftknife in street in early hours

A drunken 51 year-old man brandished a craftknife on a Mansfield street in the early hours, a court was told.

Timothy Knox asked another man: ‘Have you met my friend Stanley?’

The police were called to Rosemary Street and Knox, of Layton Avenue, Mansfield, was arrested.

Nottingham Crown Court was told that he pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article. He was sentenced to six months prison suspended for a year and ordered to do 100 hours unpaid work for the community.

He will be under probation supervision.

Jim Metcalf, prosecuting said a man living in flats on Chaucer Street called the police in the early hours of August 2. Two of his friends were returning to his flat when Knox appeared and produced the knife.

Knox threatened to ‘Stanley’ the flat occupier and one of his friends, said Mr Metcalf.

They were shocked and thought they were going to be attacked in the street.

The prosecution accepted Knox had no serious intention to carry out an attack but had waved the craftknife around and made threats.

In mitigation it was said Knox had been unemployed since last November and had now stopped drinking. He could give no explanation for his behaviour.

Judge John Milmo told Knox the offence had taken place in dangerous circumstances and the next thing could be some one getting slashed.
