A DISABLED Mansfield man says his mobility scooter was taken for a joyride a week after burglars stole a laptop and a mobile phone.
Steve Evans, of Butler Crescent, Bull Farm Estate, has now been reunited with his scooter after it was dumped in a hedge near his home.
The 53-year-old believes the second theft could have been avoided if police had investigated the first report more thoroughly.
Mr Evans said the key to his scooter was one of the items missing following the first burglary on 18th August. A laptop, mobile phone and a packet of cigarettes were also taken.
On 25th August, Mr Evans said thieves removed fence panels to enter his garden and took his mobility scooter. It was found a couple of days later.
He said: “It seems a bit of a coincidence that the mobility scooter key was taken a week before the scooter itself was stolen. It’s quite badly damaged, it looks like it has been taken for a joyride.
“I think it could have been avoided if police took me seriously first time around.”
Inspector Mark Webster from Nottinghamshire Police said: “Officers conducted enquiries at the scene and in the local area following both incidents.
“I would like to remind residents the importance of locking external doors, even when at home. Keep valuable items out of view and away from doors and windows.”
