Mansfield fundraiser to raise charity cash during Alzheimer’s Research UK’s Big Walk
A Mansfield fundraiser, whose mother has Alzheimer’s, is challenging people in Nottinghamshire to join in a six-mile Big Walk to raise funds for pioneering dementia research.
Ruth Hobbs is organising the Nottinghamshire Big Walk on Sunday 12th August in aid of Alzheimer’s Research UK, the UK’s leading dementia research charity.
Ruth was inspired to organise the event after her mother, Dinah, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease last year. Ruth’s father Gordon, who lives in Sutton-on-Ashfield, has already raised £1500 for the charity – and spurred on by his achievement, Ruth hopes to encourage walkers of all ages to sign up for next month’s event.
The six-mile circular walk will follow the route of The Lady Chatterley Trail, starting and finishing at Teversal Trails Visitors Centre. Teversal is thought to be the setting of DH Lawrence’s famous novel Lady Chatterley’s Lover, and walkers who take part on the day will have the chance to enjoy the beautiful rural landscape that fired the author’s imagination.
Ruth said: “When Mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s it was a huge shock for all the family, and seeing her slowly deteriorate is incredibly difficult for all of us, especially Dad.
“We decided we wanted to support Alzheimer’s Research UK because research is the only way to beat this dreadful disease.
“I’ve always enjoyed walking and have often thought it would be fun to start a walking club, so organising the Big Walk seemed like a natural thing for me to do.
“The route we’ve chosen will give walkers the chance to take in a piece of literary history, and the event is a great opportunity for people to come together for an enjoyable day out in support of an important cause. We’d like as many people as possible to join in on the day and raise money for research that can make a difference to people like Mum.”
The Nottinghamshire Big Walk starts at 10am on Sunday 12th August, at Teversal Visitors Centre, Carnarvon Street, Teversal NG17 3HJ.
Registration costs £10 or £5 for under-16s, and includes a free t-shirt and prize draw entry.
