Mansfield academy pupil in GCSE English result row

THE mother of a Mansfield pupil is angry with Brunts Academy after her daughter was assured a C grade for GCSE English but only got a D.
Erin Mordey (16) was told she had achieved the C grade in summer 2011 and was free to study another GCSE subject the following year.
However, due to controversial grade boundary changes by the regulator Ofqual, Erin’s work was given a D after marking this summer.
Her mum Faith Caine thinks the school was wrong to make the early judgement.
Erin has now enrolled on a course at West Notts College but has to take a GCSE English re-sit in November.
Faith said: “She is having to re-visit the work after a year which is very difficult.
“Ofqual don’t set the boundaries until all the marking has been done.
“If that’s the case, the school shouldn’t make judgements the year before.
“They moved the goalposts and it wasn’t a fair game.
“I haven’t received an apology from the school. They seem to be blaming Ofqual and Ofqual say they have done nothing wrong.”
A spokesman from Brunts academy said they were ‘disappointed’ with the grade boundary changes.
He added: “We, like many schools, parents and students nationally are disappointed with the change in grade boundaries for this year’s English examination.
“The effect and impact that this has had for several of our students is a disappointment to all staff who rigorously prepared students for exams.
“The Academy is currently working with several students who have asked for support in re-sitting the exam.”
Ofqual’s chief regulator, Glenys Stacey, said they acted properly when setting the boundaries.
She said: “We have found that examiners acted properly, and set the boundaries using their best professional judgement, taking into account all of the evidence available to them.
“We will talk with schools, exam boards and assessment experts to see what lessons can be learnt and what can be done better in the future.”
