Man hit by car after row over television

A SUTTON man thought he was going to die when a man drove up the pavement at him and pinned him against a lamppost, a court was told.
The violent incident followed what a judge called a ‘stupid argument over a television.’
Victim Kyron Townsend had his pelvis fractured in five places.
His mobility will never be the same again, Nottingham Crown Court was told.
Car driver Jeremy Weiss was jailed for two and a half years after admitting causing grievous bodily harm.
The 38 year-old, of Old Whittington Lane, Unstone, near Chesterfield, who also admitted dangerous driving and driving with excess alcohol, was banned for five years.
Mr Townsend was at a friend’s house in Sutton on 1st May when he heard that Weiss had gone to his mother’s home armed and making threats, said Sam Skinner, prosecuting.
He ran back home and said he saw Weiss in a Ford Fiesta, which reversed onto the pavement at the junction of Caunts Crescent and Brierley Road.
He ran but could not escape and tried to hide behind a lamppost but was hit by the car. The victim put the speed at nearly 30 mph.
Weiss drove off leaving him lying injured on the ground.
The drunken driver was arrested soon afterwards by the police and had a baseball bat in his front passenger footwell.
The victim later told the police: “I really thought I was going to die. I was in so much pain I thought my life was over.”
He was on crutches and still had nightmares.
In mitigation James Rowbottom said Weiss behaved totally out of character and expressed his utter remorse.
Judge Jonathan Teare told Weiss the row over the TV, which Mr Townsend had bought, could have been sorted out by payment of money or by some other means. But it escalated into extreme violence.
The judge told Weiss: “It may have been a moment of madness on your part but it is a lifetime of misery for him.”
