AN ELDERLY woman had a lucky escape after a fire ravaged her Mansfield home just weeks after she moved out.

Firefighters were called to the large detached house on the A60 Nottingham Road, at the junction with Berry Hill Lane, at 11.45am today (Tuesday).

Crews from Mansfield, Ashfield and an aerial ladder platform from Chesterfield were needed to tackle the blaze which was mainly in the roof space.

The house was owned by John Davies, who passed earlier this year, and his sister Marian Tyers (82) had been living at the property on her own.

Her son, who did not want to be named, said his mum was recently moved from the house and into council accommodation.

He said: “It’s a wonderful house. It wasn’t in a very good state inside and needed a lot of work doing but it’s a fantastic property.

“They don’t make them like this anymore.

“It is lucky the trees around it didn’t go up as well.”

Police were also in attendance and closed the A60 to southbound traffic which caused long delays for motorists heading away from the town centre.

Watch Commander Mick Topping said the fire was too severe to tackle from inside the house.

He said: “The fire was concentrated in the roof space of the property.

“We sent in two firefighters with breathing apparatus and a hose reel but the fire was that fierce we had to withdraw. A sweep and search was carried out to make sure there was no one inside.

“It was decided to fight the fire from outside so we used an aerial ladder platform and hose reels.”
