Kirkby primary school opens new extension

THE number of pupils on roll at a Kirkby primary school has increased after a £400,000 new extension was built and other improvements made.
Nottinghamshire County Council chairman, Coun Carol Pepper, and Coun Philip Owen, committee chairman for children and young people’s services, officially opened the £411,000 extension to Kingsway Primary School yesterday.
Completion of the office extension and other refurbishment meant that in September, the school was able to offer 45 places in its reception intake instead of the previous 30.
Over time, the expansion will see the roll increase from approximately 210 to 315 children, with all year groups having space for 45 pupils.
Coun Owen said: “This project was initiated in December 2010 in response to anticipated demand for additional school places arising from the Lindley’s Lane housing development.
“The brief was to provide an additional 80 places and ensure that the office facilities were sufficient to meet the increased demand created in a much enlarged school.
“More children can now attend and the working environment has been dramatically improved for teachers, pupils and support staff.
“Everyone connected with this project has been delighted with the outcome and the way in which it was delivered.”
The council contributed £61,000 towards the project, and designed and managed it, bringing it in under budget and three weeks ahead of schedule.
As well as the extension, three classrooms in the main school building were upgraded and a new fire alarm system and emergency lighting fitted.
Kingsway’s headteacher Kate Burns said: “We are delighted with the design of our new building and how it harmonises so well with our existing school building, which celebrated its centenary in 2011.”
