Kirkby College cyber bullying lesson wins award
A LESSON about cyber bullying created for junior school pupils has won an Ashfield secondary school first place and a £1,000 prize in a Dragons’ Den-style competition.
The Kirkby College team created a lesson for 10 and 11-year-olds - and after delivering it and impressing staff at Morven Park Primary they have now been invited back to do it for another class.
Year 10 pupils from six Ashfield secondary schools took part in the Dragons’ Den-style competition, for which they had to design and deliver a lesson on the theme of cyber and e-bullying to younger pupils.
Each team gave a presentation about its lesson to a Dragons’ Den-style panel on Friday, which had chief superintendent Ak Khan, PCC chief executive Kevin Ellis, Venetia Francklin and Nottinghamshire County Council anti-bullying co-ordinator Lorna Naylor as its members.
The lessons the teams created included games, hot-seating, quizzes and discussion as well as videos, some made by the students themselves.
Posters, cards and leaflets were also produced as part of the resource packs they had been asked to include with their entry.
In announcing Kirkby College as the winner, Lorna Naylor said: “Your lesson worked well. What we liked was that it was simple, interactive and fun. Well done.”
Second place went to Quarrydale Academy, whose lesson for Year 7 pupils included a highly emotional film informed by a true story of a team member’s friend who took her own life as a result of online abuse.
Selston High School came third after impressing judges with their research, excellent presentation skills and strong evaluation.
Ashfield Community Safety Partnership’s Dragons’ Den-style competition has been rewarded itself, as it has just been awarded a Certificate of Commendation in the National Crimebeat Awards 2013.
A planning group led by Nottinghamshire County Council community safety officer Leah Sareen and, including representatives from Ashfield’s schools, Nottinghamshire Police, Nottinghamshire County Council and the Community Safety Partnership met regularly to plan and deliver the project.
As well as the competitive element it has also included all schools participating in a national cyber-bullying and e-safety online survey.
