John-Paul Johnson murder trial: victim killed after argument with fellow tenants

Victim: John-Paul Johnson

A 42-year-old man was killed in an ‘orgy of brutality’ by three younger men in a house they all shared in Mansfield, a court was told today (Monday).

An argument had begun when victim John-Paul Johnson was accused of over-charging for fitting a TV aerial in one of the men’s rooms, a jury heard.

Two men, Carl Green (25) and Christopher Buckland (30) have both admitted murder, Nottingham Crown Court was told.

Daniel Bastable (20) denies the charge and his trial is expected to last until the end of next week.

The violence took place in Buckland’s ground floor bedroom at the halfway house for vulnerable and homeless people on Chesterfield Road South.

The court was told by Prosecutor Stuart Rafferty QC how the men had been drinking and smoking cannabis on 24th October last year.

Mr Johnson was described by Bastable as ‘the daddy of the house.’ He was kicked and stamped on in a ‘vicious and prolonged attack,’ said Mr Rafferty.

He was also possibly hit with the edge of a can and trifle or cheese cake was rubbed into his face to humiliate him.

A pathologist found 83 separate external injuries to his head, face, body and limbs.

Every single rib had been broken through on the left side of his rib cage, which was floating unsupported.

The jury was told the three men carried the dead or dying man up to his room and locked him in.

“They then cooked up a story that he had come home injured and they had done their best to help him,” said Mr Rafferty.

“Blood on Bastable’s trainers showed he could not have just been sitting, watching and doing nothing.”

The trial continues.
