Jealous Shirebrook dad handed extra punishment after assault

A jealous Shirebrook dad who assaulted his partner following a house party has been handed extra punishment by magistrates.

The victim had been in a relationship with Jonathan Millband that she described as volatile.

“She says he was controlling. He didn’t like her seeing her friends and he was paranoid, which she put down to his cannabis use,” Sarah Haslam, prosecuting, told the Chesterfield bench.

“She was accused of whispering something to a male at the party,”

A blazing row blew up later at home and she pushed him away. Millband left but returned, calling her a “slag”.

“She tried to get away and he pulled her back. He accepted picking her up from behind and she suffered bruising to her chest,” said Mrs Haslam.

Millband (20) of Recreation Road, Shirebrook, was arrested and told police he loved the woman and did not want to lose her.

He admitted the 12th August assault and breaching a suspended prison sentence order by not completing the required numbers of unpaid work.

The suspended term of imprisonment had been imposed in March for breaching a community sentence relating to an assault on police.

Denney Lau, for MIllband, said the woman was sitting down ignoring him and, in anger, he pulled her once from behind.

He said the female had retracted her statement of complaint to police and accepted she had exaggerated the incident.

“He was remorseful and upset and he asked for help at the police station. He understands his attitude is suffocating and he needs to change.

“There are problems about his insecurities. Accommodation has been a difficulty over the years with him choosing between his mother and father,” said Mr Lau, adding that MIllband had started a new job in the warehouse at Sports Direct.

Deputy District Judge Joanne Hirst told Millband: “I accept it was one grab. If you breach the order again you will go to prison - I don’t make idle threats.”

She imposed a one-year probation supervision order and an extra 10 hours unpaid work, with £85 costs.
