HGV driver grew cannabis in his Mansfield home

A heavy goods driver, who used cannabis to relieve his back pain, was caught growing a valuable crop at his Mansfield home.

Simon Hall (50) foolishly allowed someone else to set up a cultivation operation in two of his bedrooms, Nottingham Crown Court was told.

The estimated yield from the plants was almost two kilos, worth between £10,000 and £18,000.

He told the police his part in the deal would have been to receive some of the cannabis for his own use.

Hall, a man of previous good character, of Langford Avenue, admitted production of cannabis and was sentenced to 200 hours’ unpaid work, with a 10 months prison sentence suspended for two years.

Police with a warrant discovered the grow on 29th November last year.

Twenty plants in pots were found in each of two areas in the first bedroom, said Jim Metcalf, prosecuting.

A second bedroom had been set up with lighting and ventilation systems but no plants had been started there.

Hall said he had been growing the plants on some one else’s behalf. His barrister Errol Ballentyne said: “He has been incredibly foolish and has lost his good name.

“He was rather naïve and trusting and was susprised at the scale of the operation.”

He had already had surgery for his back pain.

Judge Jonathan Teare said it was more likely than not that Hall had been led into it by someone else, but growing cannabis was a serious matter.

He added: “There is too much of it nowadays and it spreads the use of drugs into the community.”
