A Mansfield school’s production of the musical Hairspray has been a sell-out success.

Around 50 students at All Saints Catholic Academy backcombed their bee-hives and coiffured their quiffs for the high-energy show which is set in Baltimore in 1962.

The show, which opened on Sunday June 29th and ran for four sell-out performances over three nights, saw Heather Greenhalgh play teenager Tracy Turnblad as she pursues stardom as a dancer on a local TV show and rallies against racial segregation.

Jon Holt, business manager at the said: “Everybody was raving about it! There were some absolutely fantastic performances and great work from the support crew.

“It was probably the best school production we have done. It was spectacular.”

Rehearsals have been taking place for several months following rigorous auditions which were held in March. And the cast delighted other students when they performed two songs in the canteen as a ‘flash-mob’ to promote the show last month.

Hairspray is a 2007 American musical film based on the 2002 Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn was based on John Waters’s 1988 comedy film of the same name.

The show was directed by two members of staff – Vickie Elizaga and Debbie Pearce – and the musical director was George Stanton. Sam Bernard played Edna Turnblad and Jake Dennison played Wilbur Turnblad.
