WHEN Mansfield bride-to-be Sonya Freeston was planning her big day she knew her future husband was busy with another woman - Olympic golden girl Jessica Ennis.
But bridegroom Derry Suter works as a soft tissue analyst and has been a member of Team Jennis - the group of dedicated professionals who keep the heptathlon gold medallist in top form - for the last 10 years.
Although Derry (46) proposed to long-standing girlfriend Sonya (43) two years ago, the Mansfield couple couldn’t tie the knot until after London 2012.
But when they finally walked down the aisle at the Derbyshire wedding venue of Shottle Hall last month, Jessica Ennis and a host of other sporting stars were there to help them celebrate.
The couple, of Robin Down Lane, were also joined by two-time World Squash Champion and double Commonwealth Games gold medallist Nick Matthews, Barnsley footballer Bobby Hassell and Neil Black, performance director of UK Athletics.
Sonya, who works as a substance misuse practitioner, said: “I completely understood that for the majority of 2012 another woman was going to be a priority for Derry, last summer was the culmination of four years of dedication and hard work from the whole of her team.
“For a good 12 months Derry was extremely focussed, and he was pretty much on-call all of the time. He is very passionate about what he does, and that’s one of the things that made me fall for him in the first place.
“But because Derry was so preoccupied it gave me the opportunity to focus on planning our amazing wedding day and so in our own ways we were both kept busy.”
Derry works with a host of sporting stars, including Celtic and Sheffield Wednesday football teams and former cricketer Michael Vaughan.
“Both Nick and Jess are getting married next year and they both said our wedding was fabulous.”
– I think they have picked up some tips for their own big days.
“Some friends and family were a bit star struck about some of our guests, but to me they are just lovely people I work with. We also had the British track and field medical team so if anyone had got injured at the wedding they would have been well looked after.
“We put a brief description on the back of everyone’s name cards on the table, explaining what they do or how we know them. On the back of Jess’s card we just wrote ‘Jess Ennis lookalike’, which got a few laughs.”
