A summer fair and charity fitness ‘sportathon’ are being held in aid of a new family hospice suite at Bolsover Hospital as a quiet haven for relatives during the last days of a patient’s life.

Hospital staff and grateful relatives are involved in the fundraising events for Bolsover Hospital’s new family hospice suite, which will provide a home-from-home space where relatives can have a break from the bedside but remain on the ward during the final stages of their loved-one’s life.

Bolsover Hospital staff nurse and end-of-life advocate Elaine Sly, said: “We have been overwhelmed by people’s generosity already and with these fundraising events we hope to raise enough to go ahead with the family suite.”

The suite will cost in the region of £6,000 to create and with bequests and donations from grateful patients and families already reaching around £4,000, hospital fundraisers are hoping to achieve their target soon, with the aid of these events.

Bolsover Hospital’s summer fair will take place on Saturday 2nd August 1pm - 5pm with various attractions: a home-made cake stall, arts and crafts, entertainment from a local male voice choir, games, stalls, tombola and refreshments. All welcome. Proceeds will be shared between setting up the new family suite and Bolsover Hospital’s day unit.

The ‘sportathon’ is being organised by grateful relative Sharon Clifton on Sunday, 20th July at the Sheena Wallace School of Dance in Newbold.

The family hospice suite, in a self-contained area adjoining the ward, will include a kitchen area where relatives can make themselves drinks and snacks and a quiet sitting room with a TV and a sofa-bed where relatives can sleep overnight or where they can spend quiet time away from the patient’s bedside, as well as washing facilities.

Elaine Sly added: “The aim is to provide home-like surroundings for families who are going through the loss of someone dear to them. We have identified a convenient area off the ward to locate the family suite and with the final push on fundraising we should be able to do the adaptations in time to open the suite in the autumn. That is our aim.”

Bolsover Hospital recently also created Willow Suite, which offers a space for quiet contemplation for patients, relatives and staff.
