Friends Steve Rowe and Stuart Allwood bid to break racketball record for Cancer Research UK
TWO friends are gearing up to smash a world record by playing a game of fast action racketball for more than 24 hours to raise funds for a leading cancer charity.
Steve Rowe, from Mansfield and Stuart Allwood, from Kirkby, must play a continuous game of racketball - which is similar to squash - for at least 24 hours to break the record as they raise funds for Cancer Research UK.
Their challenge is in memory of a close friend as well as Steve’s father-in-law and all those who have been affected by the disease.
Stuart said: “Myself and Steve had a really close friend called Nigel Carlisle.
“He died a couple of years ago from cancer so we wanted to raise funds for that cause.
“I’ve just turned 38 and Steve is 37 so we decided we wanted to do something different to raise the money.”
The challenge will take place at Sutton’s Lammas Leisure Centre on 8th and 9th November and they are aiming to be on the court for 26 hours.
The pair, who work for Pendragon based at Sherwood Business Park in Annesley, want to raise at least £2,880 - which is £1 for every minute they are on the court - over a 24-hour period.
Stuart, who plays racketball with Steve at Kirkby’s Festival Hall, says that the sport is slightly different to squash.
“It has got similar rules to squash but it has a bigger ball,” he says.
“The racket is also slightly different because it’s got no neck.”
Meanwhile, Steve and Stuart are no strangers to fundraising and every year for the past four years, they have undertaken a new challenge.
These have included 10km runs, the Three Peaks Challenge and golf days.
