Four-metre journey costs Shirebrook man driving licence
A four-metre journey led to a Shirebrook man being caught over the legal alcohol limit and facing the risk of losing his job.
A woman woken up by car headlights shining into her bedroom at around 3am looked outside and saw neighbour Scott Ison’s Ford Mondeo shoot forward into her parked car.
Ison checked both vehicles and walked into his house. She went to his address and he asked her not to make an insurance claim, saying he would pay for the damage.
Becky Mahon, prosecuting, told Chesterfield magistrates that police were called and he went on to give a reading of 98mcgs of alcohol in 100mls of breath - almost three times the 35mcgs limit.
“He said he had been at a wedding and he returned at 2am and realised his car was parked on the road. He decided to move it onto his driveway and he hit the neighbour’s vehicle,” said Ms Mahon.
Ison (36), of Church Drive, Shirebrook, admitted drink-driving on 7th October. He was ordered to do 80 hours’ unpaid work and was banned from driving for 20 months, with £85 costs.
“I’m sure you are kicking yourself over this,” said presiding magistrate Tim Norton, who offered Ison an opportunity to cut the ban by a quarter by taking a drink-driving rehabilitation course.
Defence solicitor Katie Fowkes said he returned home from the wedding party by taxi and decided it would be safer to leave his car on his driveway.
“He believes he drove a grand total of four metres,” said Ms Fowkes.
She told the court Ison had worked at Toyota’s Burnaston plant, near Derby, for 10 years and was taking a course with a view to becoming a manager.
“He works a set shift pattern until August and someone living near him can take him to work. In August the shifts will change and his friend won’t be on the same pattern and he won’t be able to get to work,” said Ms Fowkes, asking the bench to keep his ban as short as possible.
