Former Ashfield District Council leader slams approved method of demolishing Sutton Baths complex

A FORMER leader of Ashfield District Council has criticised the decision to fill in the swimming pool at the soon-to-be-demolished Sutton Baths complex with ‘landfill’ material.

Coun Jason Zadrozny said the method of demolition, which was approved by Ashfield District Council’s planning committee on Thursday night, was not environmentally-friendly and that the council ‘could do better for residents.’

As part of the plans, 1,750 tonnes of materials will be removed from the site, while 2,000 tonnes of inert material will be brought in to fill the pool.

The building will now be demolished mechanically, with debris being sorted and removed.

The plans were approved, subject to several conditions. One of these included retaining the materials from the facade and storing them so they can potentially be used in future development and minimising disruption to the highways network and neighbouring residents.

Speaking during the meeting, Coun Zadrozny said: “This is one of the most un-environmentally-friendly ways of demolishing the site. If a developer came to us wanting to use these methods, the council would not allow them.

“If we are going to lose this building we should at least do it in an environmentally-friendly way. I think there are better ways we could fill the hole and we are not giving the best to our residents.”

Cabinet members recently announced plans to knock down the building, which has been empty since 2008, to make way for housing for the elderly.

Some residents raised objections to the council’s plan for housing, saying that the building should be kept for future generations. However, councillors say the development will provide housing and reduce crime.
