Facebook photo led to Alfreton dad assaulting estranged partner

AN Alfreton dad punched his estranged partner in the head during a row outside a school playground, a court heard.

William Wagg and the victim, who have been in a two-year relationship, argued on 22nd September about a photograph posted on Facebook.

Wagg (29) became aggressive and threw her mobile phone and clothes onto the floor of their new flat.

The victim told police there had been domestic violence in the past and she felt afraid, so she went to her mother’s home.

Chesterfield magistrates heard that she was with her mother in the playground at a school on 25th September, waiting to pick up her young sister.

“She was approached by the defendant who suggested that they needed to get back together. There was an argument and he threw a key fob to the ground.

“She followed her mother out of the playground and was followed by the defendant onto Grange Street where he punched the side of her head.

“It caused her to bite her lip, resulting in a small cut. She said she wouldn’t get back into a relationship with him,” said Jenny Fitzgerald, prosecuting.

Wagg, of Mansfield Road, Alfreton, denied hitting her following arrest but he pleaded guilty to the assault in court.

Sentence was adjourned until 24th October for probation service reports and he was granted bail on condition he did not contact her.

The court heard that Wagg had previously served a suspended jail sentence and had a conviction for affray in a domestic setting but not involving Ms Joynes.

“It was one punch to the side of the face and the injuries were relatively minor,” said Christopher Hallas, for Wagg.

“But it was unprovoked and outside a school in the presence of children, all of which would cause concern.”
