RESIDENTS say they could face eviction because of posters in their windows asking that political leaflets not to be delivered.

Around a dozen people in the Beardsley Road area of Edwinstowe displayed posters asking not to be bombarded by one particular candidate standing in tomorrow’s council by-election, describing it as “rubbish”.

They say up to four leaflets a week had been coming through their door from the candidate. But two residents have been sent letters from Newark & Sherwood Homes ordering them to be removed.

One was Gail Benison, who said: “It’s nothing to do with politics, I was thinking about not voting, I just don’t want this stuff through my door.

“They are saying they’ll take it further, which means eviction. If they’re trying to to scare us, then they’ve succeeded.”

She also received a letter saying the £400 annually given by the council for the residents’ association group would be withdrawn because of the actions.

MP Mark Spencer even condemned the issue in Parliament this week, calling it a “drastic overreaction” by the council.

His views were given the support of secretary of state, Eric Pickles.

Meanwhile, Newark & Sherwood Homes say they received a number of complaints over the content of the posters which were “causing offence to members of the community”.

They said the action taken was in accordance with the “standard operations” of the company.

The firm also said the withdrawal of the residents’ association funding was because members are not permitted to “act in a political manner”, which they say had been breached by the residents displaying the posters.
