Drug addict is spared prison

Mansfield Magistrates' Court

A DISTRICT judge warned a homeless drug addict he may face jail time if he fails to clean up his act and comply with a community order.

Mansfield Magistrates’ Court was told on Thursday how Sutton man Andrew Butler (33), of no fixed abode, had been living in a tent for the last six months and had missed two drug rehabilitation appointments because he could not afford travel costs.

He had been given the order as part of a suspended sentence and admitted failing to comply with the community requirements of a suspended sentence order.

Mark Stocks, mitigating, said Butler, who had used amphetamine intravenously for a long period and had received treatment for a mental illness, had struggled to meet travel costs to and from appointments as the probation service only reimbursed him afterwards.

Judge Diane Baker ordered the defendant to serve another month on top of his six-month drug rehabilitation order.

She said: “I am expecting you in the next two months to be giving negative drug tests completely.

“If you do not it is back in front of me and I will have no choice but to send you into custody.”
