Drink-driver says he won’t drive again
A 64 year old Swanwick man who drove after drinking more than three times the limit told a court his motoring days were over.
David Hill was “shopped” by a witness who saw him pull into the Co-op car park in Leabrooks in erratic fashion at 5.30pm on 22nd September.
Hill staggered into the shop and appeared unable to stand without leaning on the counter. He bought a bottle of brandy and left.
Police were called police and they found Hill and his wife near the Peugeot 306 which was parked outside their home in Azalea Avenue, Swanwick.
Chesterfield magistrates were told (monday) that he gave a reading of 108mcgs of alcohol in 100mls of breath, the limit being 35mcgs.
Hill stated that he walked home at 2pm after drinking four pints of beer in a pub and he then drank wine.
“He said he drank possibly a whole bottle. He couldn’t be sure but he said he had been drinking until he got in the car and his wife was in the passenger seat,” said Lynn Manning, prosecuting.
“He bought the brandy and gave it to her and went to get some takeaway food. They returned home and she dropped the bottle as she got out of the car and police arrived.”
Hill admitted drink-driving. He had no previous convictions. He was banned from driving for two years and handed a 7.30pm- 6am curfew for two months, with £85 costs
“I can’t defend myself because I’m guilty,” said Hill, who told the court he would be able to get to work without his car.
He declined an opportunity to reduce his ban by a quarter by taking a drink-driving rehabilitation course, saying: “I don’t intend driving again.”
