Council chairman visits Mansfield Meals at Home service

THE Chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council will get a behind the scenes tour of the council’s award winning Meals at Home service next week.

Councillor Carol Pepper joined crews on the road in Gedling this week, fighting their way through the snow to deliver meals to around 1,700 older people throughout the county.

And next week she will get an insight into how the meals are prepared and distributed with visits to County Enterprise Foods in Worksop and the Meals at Home distribution centre near Mansfield.

On Tuesday 29th January the Chairman will see the range of 70 different meals - including main meals, teatime snacks, food for different dietary requirements and desserts - being prepared and cooked at County Enterprise Foods, all using locally sourced ingredients.

And on Wednesday 30th January the Chairman will see the Rainworth distribution unit in action, where a fleet of 25 vehicles set off from on their rounds every day.

The meals are either delivered frozen to be reheated in the home or piping hot, kept warm by on-board ovens in the delivery vehicles.

Coun Pepper said, “I know from speaking to happy customers on the rounds what a highly valued service Meals at Home is and what a great job our teams do in getting meals to our residents, whatever the weather.

“Having seen the end product being enjoyed by our customers, I’m really looking forward to seeing the complicated logistics and detailed planning behind producing and delivering so many meals every day.”
