Councillor Stuart Moody, who sits on Warsop Parish Council, was giving his verdict on the recent successful Warsop Carnival in which he felt the support from the district council for the event had been lacking.

Held last month, more than 4,000 people attended the one-day event which is the biggest of its kind in the region.

But during the recent Warsop Parish Council meeting, Coun Moody said the district council had under-resourced the event.

“They (Mansfield District Council) failed in north Nottinghamshire’s biggest events, which is a shame,” he said.

“It’s perhaps jealousy on the district council’s part because we can run a better event than they can, but that’s my own opinion.”

Coun Moody said the district council did not provide enough bins or any litter pickers.

“They did provide toilets and fencing of which the organisers are grateful, but it seems to be a constant battle with Mansfield District Council to enable the event to take place,” he added.

In response Andrew Tristram, portfolio holder for the environment at Mansfield District Council, said: “All waste coming off the park has to be treated as trade waste and the council did provide six big trade waste bins and 12 trade waste wheelie bins free of charge.

“This represented a saving of £525 to the organisers.

“The council also provided 23 toilets and 240 crowd barriers at a cost of £1,800 to the council and allowed the carnival to use the field at The Carrs free of charge, which was another £1,000 saving to the organisers.

“The council did inform the carnival committee that it would have to provide its own bin bags, and litter pickers were not provided because there was no confirmation in writing over exactly what was required from the carnival committee. In future we will have to ensure that there is a clear agreement in place over what the council will provide.

“I think it is unfortunate that Coun Moody has criticised the district council in this way when the council has consistently shown a good level of support for this event over the years.”
