Inner Wheel

October’s meeting at Portland College was attended by 21 members. Guest speaker Mr Adrian Reddall gave a talk called 70 Years A Squirrel. He showed family articles and his antique shop finds, some of which appeared on BBC’s Antiques Roadshow. At a business meeting, president Mrs Joan Broughton present Mrs Pam Whetton with her vice-chairmen’s badge. Arrangements were made to attend the town’s Remembrance Day service, for visits to other Inner Wheel clubs and for fundraising events including a coffee morning and a brass band concert at Sutton Centre Theatre on Friday, 19th October, at 7.30pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Patients’ Panel

Mr Beer chaired Wednesday week’s meeting. Patients were advised to contact the surgery on 01623 551015 for information about flu vaccine, especially people over 65 and people in at risk groups, and about the practice’s mother and baby and walking groups. Patients were invited to attend the next patients’ panel meeting at the surgery on Wednesday, 7th November, at 2pm.

Fourth Brownies: Young Leaders and Guides ran yesterday week’s meeting which included a yoga class, hand massage, nail painting and nail art and a relaxation session with music. Leaders were Tina Duncalf and Claire Nelson.

Under Fives’ group

Activities on an autumn theme included painting, a nature walk, making a display and miming. Children collected leaves and pine cones and the story How To Catch A Falling Star, by Heidi Howarth, was read. Other activities included doing jigsaws and dying pasta to make necklaces. A Ladybird certificate for good behaviour was given to Imogen Botham.

Third Brownies

At Thursday week’s meeting Brownie Traditions’ badgework included tying knots, plaiting and learning what went into uniform pockets in the past. Cards were made to celebrate leaders Jason Trueman’s and Liz Guy’s birthdays and a cake was eaten. Other leaders were Gemma Trueman and Angj Brooks.

Fourth Guides

At Monday week’s meeting members had a talent show and games. Leaders were Liz Belshaw, Trish Baines and Nikki Walton.

St Luke’s Church

Maureen Peat led and preached at October’s worship service at Willetts Court.

St Mary’s Church

The Vicar, the Rev David James, presided and preached at Sunday week’s Eucharists. Gill James assisted at the later service and Tim Guy led intercessions. Junior church members and leaders met at Magdalene Centre.

Zion Baptist Church

Sunday week’s worship was led by Helen Tomlinson and the worship team. Testimonies were given by Michelle Hutchison and Martin Weston. Blair Hutchison was in charge of sound and lighting mixing systems. Speaker Alan Lowe’s theme was Spiritual Gifts, One Body, Many Parts. At Eastside Centre last Monday week SureStart had a session and WNC (West Nottinghamshire College) ran a course. Last Tuesday week there was an Early Start meeting and on Wednesday week, a WNC course and an Activity Club meeting. There were meetings of Kerry’s Can Can Club and junior and senior youth clubs on Thursday week. SureStart ran a session on Friday week.

United Reformed

Mr Ken Calder preached at Sunday week’s service led by Mr Bill Gibson who also gave a children’s talk. Mr Ivan Smith led prayers and door steward Mrs Arlene Bradbury gave a reading. Miss Eileen Jackson was vestry steward. Mrs Ellen Hartshorne arranged flowers provided by Mrs Ivy Gibbons. Mrs Bradbury and Mrs Gill Brunt served coffee. Tracey Cranfield led 1st Brownies’ meeting. At meetings of Ashfield Dragons Kick Boxing Club instructors were David Parnell, Mally Wainwright and Alan Batterham.

Community of Christ

Last Tuesday week Peacemakers’ Youth Group’s member had a cooking evening with Barbara Woodhouse, Marianne Rowe, Helen Kemp and Celia Roddis. There were a coffee morning and sale of clothes on Wednesday week. A music and games workshop in the evening was led by Wayne, Linda and Adam Rowe. Sunday week’s worship evening was led by Richard Holmes, of Nuneaton, Warwickshire, and the theme was Receive God’s Blessing.

Aspley Court Centre

Domino winners were Mary Armstrong, Joyce Gregory and Pat Swanwick at yesterday week’s meeting. Members played bingo after lunch. Games winners were Mary Armstrong, Brenda Rudhall, Dorothy Jones, May Godber and Pat Swanwick.

Brierley House Centre: Bingo callers were Mr M. Wood and Mrs J. Connah. Game winners were Mesdames M. Johnson, J Mansfield, P. Dykes, T. Lovatt, M. Brain, D. Mitchell, Connah, E. Moore, C. Stevenson, E. McKee, M. Pitchford, E. Hill, J. Wood, J. Gregory, W. Harris, A. Ball. M. Rolley, J. Townsend and B. Toon and Messrs Wood, A. Morrison, D. Johnson, A. Saysert and H. Mitchell. Raffle winners were Mesdames Pitchford, V. Morrison, Hill, Lovatt, Rolley and Townsend.

St John’s Methodist

Olive Branch Coffee Bar was open on Friday week and Saturday week. There was a Boys’ Brigade meeting on the Friday. Harvest weekend started on the Saturday with a tea and film show. The Minister, the Rev Alan Boyd, led Sunday week’s all-age worship and baptised Indie Hope Carter. Mr Bryn Hughes played the clavinova. Mr John Whitehead led the evening songs of praise with Phoenix Choral Society. The Rev John Hale and Mr Gordon Bestwick led prayers and Mrs Doreen Young played the clavinova. On Monday week there were meetings of Ashfield Childminders’ Group, Monday Christian Group, Girls’ Brigade and Sutton Choral Society. Yesterday week there were meetings of the carers’ and toddlers’ and Scrabble groups. There was a zumba class in the evening. Last Wednesday at the community room there was an art class and a meeting of Sutton Heritage Group. A ploughman’s lunch was served at the hall.

New Cross Church

The Vicar, the Rev Tim Mitchell, celebrated Wednesday week’s Holy Communion and with Adrian Self led a Life Is For Living course at Community Meeting Point. Hilary Bostock led Pins and Needles Group’s meeting and Thursday week’s card making session. June Bagley led Friday week’s MINGLE Group meeting. There was a Life Is For Living meeting. Jane Selby led the children’s Glee Dance Club meeting. The vicar celebrated Sunday week’s Holy Communion and, with Steve Cotterill, led Morning Prayer. Youth team members arranged 11 Alive service. Greeters were Peter and Susanne Brunt. Steward Anne Acton and Derek Smith took the offertory. Joyce Handford and Pat Webb gave readings. Carol Frear and Pauline Hawkins served refreshments. Norma Mitchell and Julie Cotterill led Monday week’s toddlers’ group meeting. Jane Selby led a drama group meeting. There was a community choir practice yesterday week.

Salvation Army

Major Joy Caddy led Wednesday week’s over 60s meeting. Maj Peter Disney, Janet Sawyer and Brenda Langford served meals at the lunch club meeting. Maj Dawn Disney led Sunday week’s morning meeting and Maj Peter Disney, the evening meeting. Maj Dawn Disney led Monday week’s parents’ and toddlers’ meeting. Jean Spooner, Sylvia Linnell and Janet Sawyer provided Monday week’s harvest supper.
