Fifteen, Y9 students have been selected to form the ‘2012 Legacy Leaders Group’. These students will get the opportunity to develop their leadership skills in a variety of sporting opportunities over the next year. In partnership with the Bolsover and District School Sports Partnership and Bolsover District Council students will receive training. Shirebrook Cluster School Sport competitions and festivals are organised throughout the year for students in Years 1 - 6. This year’s calendar started at Model Village Primary School when teams from Model Village Primary, Brookfield Primary and Whaley Thorns took part in the Year 5/6 Cluster Football competition. Shirebrook Academy students Nathan Clarke (Y11), Elliott Edmunds (Y10) and Scott Patterson (Y10) officiated at the matches. The Year 7 boy’s football team coached by Mr McGuiness made their debut in an away match at Tibshelf.
RBL British Legion
The Shirebrook Remembrance Day parade and church service will be held Sunday, 11th November. The parade will form on Shirebrook Market Place and march off via Market Street at 10.30am. The march will then proceed through Station Road, Carter Lane, The Rocklands, Main Street and Church Drive before arriving at the church at 11am for the Last Post, two minutes’ silence, Reveille and the laying of wreaths at the war memorial outside church before the service. The parade will reform outside church on Church Drive at 12pm and proceed to the Royal British Legion Social Club and Headquarters via Main Street, Central Drive, Acreage Lane and Church Drive. The parade will be dismissed at 12.15pm. Wreaths may be obtained by contacting the Royal British Legion, Shirebrook by telephone or in person or by contacting Mr Mayes 743036.
A band concert and raffle in aid of prostrate cancer in the Auditorium at Sports Direct, Shirebrook and organised by Mr K. Walker,chairman, Bolsover District Council raised £1355. Mr Walker thanked those who donated prizes, Sports Direct for their hospitality, everyone who supported the event and Shirebrook Miners Welfare Unison Band.
An Open Doors event with 40s style dance group will be held tonight at 6.30pm. All welcome. Mrs A. M. Hellewell led the Alpha Course meeting yesterday week. Tracey Foster led the community choir practice on Wednesday week. Thursday week’s prayer meeting and Bible study class was led by Amanda Pell who led the Sunday celebration meeting.
Members designed textured pictures with an Autumn theme, played games. Leaders were Paula Chambers and Marie Crew.
Holy Trinity Church
A service of Communion by Extension was led by Mr Ian P. Hill on Sunday week. Mr Hill gave the Old Testament Bible reading. The chalice was administered by Miss Winnie Palmer. Mrs Kiltie Hill gave the Gospel reading and took the collection. Mr D. Maynard gave the message. Prayers were led by Mrs N. Maynard. Mr D Watson was organist.
Mrs M. Blakemore welcomed dancers to Shirebrook Welfare Social Centre yesterday week evening. Mr and Mrs J. Stringfellow organised.
Mrs K. Lindsay welcomed Mesdames C. Benson, S. Creswell, D. Wake, D. Stevenson, G. Mee, M. Mitchell, J. Charlesworth and B. Barson to Shirebrook Village Hall yesterday week, for line dancing and gentle exercise to music.
Chit Chat Club
Mrs D. Gough welcomed members to Shirebrook Village Hall yesterday week. Members played bingo with caller Maureen Gough and held a raffle won by Lily Fewster. Refreshments were served by Mesdames A. Toon, M. Howard, A. Draycott and Miss M. Gough.
Happy Chat Club
Julie Bonsall opened the members meeting and served refreshments at Shirebrook Leisure Centre. Carol Ann Wall organised a raffle won by Lynn Pearson, Julie Bonsall, Joyce Askew and Christine Cartwright. Table games were organised by Audrey Doyle. A tombola and baking stall raised £120 for funds.
Richmond Care Home
Residents have played musical instruments, taken part in a sing-along, held a movie night and played bingo with Tracey Nussey. Jade Taylor was the visiting hairdresser.
Mrs B. Potter welcomed members to Shirebrook Miners Welfare Social Centre.
Staff and Social Club
Mr M. Fletcher hosted a games night on Monday week. Darts winner was Mr R. Sharpe, pool match winner was Mr M. Fletcher and the dominoes winner was Mr B. Perrin.
Self- Help Group
Mesdames G. Mee, E. Hayes, I. Cooke and D. Graves prepared a room at Shirebrook Village Hall on Wednesday week ahead of the meeting. Mrs Mee called the bingo. Raffle prizes were provided by Mrs D. Stevenson and won by Joan Roe. Birthday cards and chocolate were presented to Doreen Creswell and Diane Graves.
The weekly quiz was won by Joyce Jarvis. Team ‘A’ won the Tuesday week and the Thursday week darts tournament. A midweek luncheon was prepared by Maureen Greig. A sale of handmade cards was held last Monday.
Grange Care Home
Residents in the residential lounge made Hallowe’en decorations. Hamilton Suite residents took part in chair-based exercises, held a sing-a-long to their 1950s and 60s favourite tunes. In the Nursing Unit, residents held a chit and chatter session. Staff and residents dressed in pink and wore ribbon badges for ‘breast cancer pink week.’ £30 was raised. Activities led by Mandy Lindley and Natasha Westwood.
New Bassett House
Residents have played bingo and visited the hairdresser. A group of four residents took part in a stencilling activity as part of a new arts project. An entertainer and a pie and peas tea has been booked for Hallowe’en afternoon.
Sunday week’s evening worship was led by the Rev Ann Anderson. Readers were Lindsey Ferreday and Linda Carter. Joyce Parsons took the collection. Stewards were Robert Fennell and Sue Hall.
A concert was performed at The Assembly Rooms, Bolsoverorganised by the Rotary Club of Bolsover in aid of several charities. Led by Musical Director, Mark Wilcockson they played a programme of traditional and popular brass band music - a solo cornet by Glen Birks ‘My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose’ with horn players Janeen Burrows, Kathy Brimble, Hannah Brimble, Neil Emson and Marcel Renshaw together with flugel player Roy Briscoe playing ‘I Know Him So Well’. Raffle winner was Jane Gaddes. Band members were presented with a cheque for £150 from the Rotary Club for their funds. Band members Ruth Cartlidge and Jane Gaddes have taken part in the BBC programme Bargain Hunt.
