Coal chiefs deny that Thoresby redundancies are due ‘within days’

UK Coal have denied that first wave of redundancies at Thoresby Colliery are to be made ‘within days’.

A spokesman for the troubled company said that rumours that men were to be laid off in the coming days were not true, because they have not completed a 45 day consultation.

Both MP for Sherwood, Mark Spencer, and parliamentary candidate for the area, Leonie Mathers, had both said they are expecting miners to be laid off soon as the plan to close the pit by the end of next year continues.

But UK Coal said that talks were ongoing and no decision would be made until the consultation period was completed.

UK Coal shocked the region in April when they announced plans for a controlled closure of the mine, along with Kellingley in South Yorkshire, because the company was heavily in debt.

As part of their plans, hundreds of jobs were to go ‘within weeks’ and the rest when the pit finally closes.
