Cemetery repair work begins
WORK to repair a cemetery left smashed by a man driving a stolen JCB over a year ago has begun- Mansfield District Council has confirmed.
Parts of Warsop Cemetery were destroyed in June 2011 when the thief entered the site being pursued by police.
He flattened gravestones and entry gates were left smashed. The 34-year-old from Leeds was jailed for four-and-a-half years in October after admitting dangerous driving, theft and criminal damage.
The council has been criticised for the length of time it has taken to put it right, but said in July this year that work was due to begin.
This week, Coun Mick Barton, portfolio holder for public protection, said: “Although preparation work has taken place on site, the majority of the work, including the manufacture of the wall and gates is taking place off-site and is currently underway.
“Once work to prepare the stone has been completed, work will then continue on site to complete the project.”
