Care homes failing to meet standards

NEARLY a quarter of care homes in Mansfield and Ashfield are failing to meet standards set by the Government’s health watchdog.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) carries out regular inspections of care homes and passes on findings to Nottinghamshire County Council.
Chad looked into the results of 85 homes which showed 21 failed to meet at least one of the five basic standards set by the CQC.
Twelve homes have been told to improve in at least two areas. Six are in Mansfield, six are in Ashfield. Most are run by private sector companies.
Joyce Bosnjak, county councillor for Mansfield North and chair of the council’s overview and scrutiny committee, labelled the findings ‘appalling’.
She said: “Our elderly residents need protecting from organisations who regard profit margins as more important than the quality care they should be providing. It’s appalling - our elderly deserve better.”
Caroline Baria, service director at Nottinghamshire County Council, said they will work with the CQC to rectify concerns where necessary.
She added: “We can take action ourselves, such as suspending the contract with a particular home if our concerns are serious.
“We also carry out our own annual audit of all care homes to assess their quality. We will also respond as and when any individual concerns are raised about a particular home and keep the CQC informed of any serious issues we identify.”
Homes failing on more than one standard in Mansfield were; Newgate Lodge, Rowan-Innova House, Royal Mencap Society, Ashlands Care Home, St Marys and Richmond Residential Care Home.
