Call for old mobiles to help Mansfield youngster
Lucas Unwin collecting mobile phones to get an i pad to help him communicate
A CLIPSTONE mum is calling for people to donate their old mobile phones to help her autistic son get his hands on a vital communication tool.
Two-year-old Lucas Unwin needs 185 old phones which can be exchanged for an iPad fully loaded with ‘apps’ to help autistic youngsters.
His Mum Terri heard about the Hearts and Minds Challenge, a scheme to raise money for families with autistic children, through a family friend.
She said: “He can’t communicate and gets very frustrated. Everything needs to be visual for Lucas.
“He’s got so much built up frustration because he can’t tell us what he wants.
“The apps are specially designed to help him communicate using pictures. It’s something which will really help him.”
So far, the family, of The Circle, have collected dozens of unwanted phones but are appealing for people to send more their way to help reach the target.
Terri added: “When he is at nursery he struggles to communicate with the other children and his instant reaction can be to push people away.
“The iPad will be great because he can take it anywhere with him. It’s got a camera which we can use to take pictures of him and then use it to tell him where we are going.”
The phones don’t have to be working but can’t be more than 10 years old and must have a battery. Anyone who has an old mobile phone to donate can bring it or post it to the Chad office at 121 Newgate Lane, Mansfield.
