Dog owners from far and wide took advantage of four free PetCheck Roadshows held across the Bolsover district.

Both Council’s, in association with the PDSA, staged the roadshows at Bolsover, Eckington, Clay Cross and South Normanton and 205 dogs where micro-chipped by the Council’s Dog Warden and 111 received health checks from the PDSA veterinary nurse.

The free dog check-ups - which included weight, eyes, teeth, ears, coat condition and general fitness – where all undertaken by an experienced veterinary nurse who gave the owners feedback and information on the health of their dog.

North East Derbyshire District Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, Councillor Nick Foster said, “From the numbers attending and the comments we have received these roadshows have been a huge success. Pets are part of our families, and we know times are hard and people often cannot afford these extra’s for their pets, that’s why we wanted to give something back for free.”

The Council’s Dog Warden was also on hand to offer free micro-chipping to dogs. This small grain sized chip is inserted between the dogs’ shoulder blades and contains the dogs name, address and contact details. So if the dog becomes lost or is stolen, it can easily be scanned and traced back to its owner.

Coun Dennis Kelly, Bolsover District Council cabinet member for the environment, said, “We are particularly pleased to see so many people taking up our free micro-chipping. What with the new legislation coming into force during 2016 requiring all dogs to be micro-chipped, we want our residents to be prepared for this, that’s why we have started early to get ahead of the game and offer these free micro-chips.”

The event was also attended by many more people just wanting advice on their pets, pick up dog poo bags and information on responsible dog ownership. For more information on these issues as well as micro-chipping please contact the Dog Warden on 01246 217848.
