Blidworth Oaks celebrate Ofsted

STAFF, governors, parents and pupils are celebrating at Blidworth Oaks Primary School this week after improving their Ofsted rating following a recent inspection.

The Haywood Avenue school achieved ‘Good’ overall by inspectors who visited in January.

All categories were rated as ‘Good’ covering achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management.

The efforts of staff and their results were recognised and welcomed by the head teacher this week.

‘ I am absolutely delighted in my last year as head teacher at the school to have been awarded ‘Good’ by Ofsted,” said Celia Lassetter who has been at the school for 15 years and is due to retire in July.

Despite the school having double the national average of disabled or pupils with special educational needs as well as those eligible for free school meals, these students are not disadvantaged in any way and progress is good.

And even though teachers in five of the eight classes had been in post for less than a year, results throughout the year groups had progressed well.

Although teaching was graded as ‘good’ overall, some teaching was said to be ‘outstanding’. However more teaching of the higher standard was required to enable an upgrade.

Other areas noted in the report requiring improvement at Blidworth Oaks included the need for pupils to make faster progress in English and maths through handwriting and presentation skills.

Tackling a minority of families ‘who do not yet see the value of their child’s regular attendance at school’ was another area needing action.

Mrs Lassetter said these would be a future priority.

“All of our hard working staff have done a brilliant job and I am sure that the new head teacher, Mr Shaun Walker, will continue to take us on our journey to becoming an ‘Outstanding’ school from September.”
