Bikers set off on epic 7,500-charity trip

A GROUP of daring bikers have set off on an epic fundraising adventure across Europe to raise money for two worthy causes.

Mick Kistner, Chris Hill and Owen Atherton are undertaking the gruelling 7,500-mile journey to raise money for the 5th Mansfield Sea Scouts and the Willow Foundation — which provides special days out for 16 to 40-year-olds with life-threatening illnesses.

The six-week journey started from the Sea Scouts' hut on Devon Drive and the trio are currently making their way to the most northerly point — Norway's North Cape.

Then after braving the freezing conditions the team will make its way through Sweden, Denmark and Germany before heading through Europe and ending their trip in Gibraltar.

Speaking just before setting off on the trek, Mick, of Carlton Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, said: "We're just about prepared, it's been a bit last minute and we've all been feeling nervous but it seems alright now — I think it's just the calm before the storm!

"We're trying to take as much food and supplies as we can because the first part is going to be difficult."

The trip has taken 18 months to organise and featured numerous fundraising to bring it to fruition.

Added Mick: "I'm a lorry driver myself, so I'm used to driving but the other guys have had to get used to the long driving times.

"I think maybe we should have done some more training for it, but we've put so much work into preparing for it we've hardly had the time!"
