SPECIAL equipment will be installed by the county council to measure the speed and flow of traffic along the A60 Cuckney Hill.
Chad is campaigning for speed cameras to be added between Church Warsop and Cuckney following six deaths in the last six years
A petition with nearly 1,500 signatures backing the appeal was handed over to Nottinghamshire County Council last week.
Rachel Winter, whose brother Luke (24) was killed in August, gathered hundreds of signatures by taking petitions around Langwith and Shirebrook.
Luke’s pregnant partner Keeley Nattriss, who also lost her father Tony in a crash on the road in 2009, is backing the campaign along with Luke’s parents Geoff and Sharon.
Sonya Hurt, senior crash site investigator for Nottinghamshire County Council, has visited the site along with Mansfield MP Sir Alan Meale and county councillor for Warsop, John Allin.
Ms Hurt said a range of options will be considered with average speed cameras the most likely if traffic calming measures are deemed appropriate.
Suzanne Heydon, group manager for highway safety at the county council, said a full assessment of the area is a priority.
She said: “Work to install apparatus to measure speed and flow of traffic in the area has been ordered as a priority.
“The information gathered will help us make a judgement on what sort of casualty reduction measures, if any, would be appropriate.”
Dr Mike Smith, clerk of Cuckney Parish Council, is unsure if speed cameras will reduce accidents on the 2km stretch.
He said: “There’s no absolute unity about the best way forward. Looking at the deaths, I don’t think cameras would have made a significant difference.
“As I use the hill, I don’t see many people going too fast. Overtaking at speed is a rarity.”
“If cameras are added it would have to be average speed cameras.”
