Ashfield Rose award for volunteers who set up Kirkby dementia support group
Lorna Sharp, Joan Cannan, Joan Sharp, with Jade and Zoe Thompson, owners of Floral Expressions and Freda Colley who nominated her volunteers for the Forget Me Not Dementia group, received their roses in Kirkby on Monday.
THREE caring volunteers who have dedicated countless hours of service to dementia sufferers in Kirkby have become the first people to be honoured with an Ashfield Rose.
The Ashfield Rose was launched by Chad, in conjuction with Kirkby florist Floral Expressions, to celebrate the locals who go the extra mile to make sure Ashfield is a better place to live.
Joan Sharp, volunteer treasurer, Joan Cannan, volunteer joint secretary, and Lorna Sharp, website creator and manager, were nominated for the award in recognition of the efforts they have shown to help the newly-created Forget me not Dementia Support Group thrive.
The group, which meets at Kirkby Trinity CentrePoint on Diamond Avenue, was set up earlier this year and gives people with dementia, their carers, family and friends a chance to discuss living with the illness.
The caring group also offers much-needed support and information.
Freda Colley, who nominated the kind-hearted trio, said: “We are a new group which started up this year. The group would not have been possible without the support of all our volunteers, especially these three.
“They have been influential in the group being established and being the success story that it has been. Without their dedication this would not have been possible.
“We have had a good year and enjoyed lots of outings, which has made a real difference to the people who the group supports.”
Events throughout the year have included dance events, visits to local garden centres, a Christmas party and various talks on living with dementia.
Meetings are varied and from time to time speakers are invited to give talks on specific topics.
The group will next meet on 17th December between 1:30pm and 3:30pm.
