Ashfield MP Gloria De Piero grilled by Sutton Centre pupils
Ashfield MP Gloria De Piero joined James Finlayson, Manager of Takeover Radio at Sutton's Framework Centre on Wednesday for a Question Time event with pupils from Sutton Centre Community College.
YOUNG people from Sutton Centre Community College were given the chance to quiz Ashfield MP Gloria De Piero on a variety of topics last week.
The Question Time-style event was hosted by Takeover Radio 106.9, which normally broadcasts from Sutton Centre, and took place at Barista coffee shop on the town’s Outram Street last Wednesday.
During the show, presented by station manager James Finlayson, students asked Miss De Piero a number of questions about the issues that concerned them.
Responding to a question about ways to improve Ashfield, the MP praised young people in the district.
She told them: “This generation has really nailed it in terms of ambition.
“People say that there is not much aspiration in Ashfield but I know that it’s not the case.
“I think Ashfield is changing and you lot are the people who are changing it. It’s a great tribute to your mums and dads and teachers.”
Afterwards, Year 9 pupil Jake Harvey said: “It was really interesting that she does do things for the community even though it’s a small area.
“I think Gloria is a bit different from most politicians - she didn’t go to Eton or Oxford.
“She also invited me to go on work experience with her - that’s amazing for someone as important as that to ask.”
And Sophie Carroll, who is a presenter on Takeover Radio and also in Year 9, added: “You can relate to her.”
The programme will be broadcast in June on Takeover Radio at a date to be confirmed.
