OVER 80 tenants attended the latest Ashfield Homes conference to learn about planned changes to the benefits system and ask questions.

The theme of this year’s conference was the Government’s Welfare Reform Act, which comes into force next year and will bring a big shake up of the current welfare system.

Tenants were told how this might impact on them and other residents in Ashfield.

The conference featured several workshops and was attended by a numberof partners, such as the Citizens Advice Bureau and Nottingham Credit Union, who were also able to give advice.

Kelly Scott, director of housing services, said: “The conference proved to be very successful, with tenants working with employees from Ashfield Homes in its planning and organising.

“The theme of Welfare Reform was very appropriate given the changes that are to be implemented over the course of the next 12 months and the impact this could have on people in Ashfield.

“The event itself was informative and provided the opportunity for tenants to debate current issues around Welfare Reform.”

Ashfield Homes board members and district councillors also attended the conference, which was opened by Cath Garrett, chairman of the Ashfield Federation of Tenants and Residents Associations.

Prizes, including Ashley the Lion mascots, were awarded to the winners of this summer’s tenants’ garden competition.
