COUNCILLORS in Ashfield are being asked to freeze council tax bills for residents for the third year running when they set their budget next week.

Ashfield District Council is meeting on Monday to approve its budget plans for the next financial year.

Though its finances are still being squeezed due to funding cuts from central Government, the authority has proposed a third council tax freeze in order to help hard-up homeowners.

Council leader John Knight said: “I am pleased that we have been able to recommend freezing council tax once again.

“If council agrees to the proposals, our residents will pay no more council tax to Ashfield than they were doing in 2010/11.

“We appreciate how difficult the recession has been for the residents of Ashfield, and will play our part, where we can, to avoid adding to their financial problems.”

The budget proposals also include measures to save £1.3m - through service reviews, partnership working and ‘making changes to the workforce where this will lead to efficiencies’.

Deputy Leader John Wilmott added: “We can never be complacent, because there are more financial challenges ahead. But we have now reduced our costs by £5m in three years and yet we are continuing to improve and develop the services we offer.”
