ALFRETON student, Iqra Shah, of Frederick Gent School, will be heading to London next week to attend the sports star studded Sky Sports Living for Sport Awards 2012 ceremony at Sky Sports Studios on Friday, 15th March.

Joined by 11 other finalists, Iqra will be presented with her regional award and will learn who has been crowned the overall UK Sky Sports Living for Sport Student of the Year 2012.

The event will be attended by Sky Sports Living for Sport’s two ambassadors, Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis and Olympic gold medal winning sprinter Darren Campbell MBE. Also in attendance will be Baroness Sue Campbell, chair of the Youth Sport Trust, Jeremy Darroch, chief executive of BSkyB and over 25 Sky Sports Living for Sport Athlete Mentors including London 2012 Olympians and Paralympians.

The awards, which recognise the efforts of students and teachers during 2012, have two categories: Student of the Year and Teacher of the Year. They celebrate the successful way secondary schools are using sport to inspire young people, thanks to their involvement in Sky Sports Living for Sport, a free initiative delivered in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust.

A spoeksman said: “Iqra stood out as a clear winner because, whilst she was previously disruptive in lessons and had poor relationships with members of staff, she showed a fantastic improvement in her leadership skills and commitment to achieving goals by the end of the Sky Sport Living for Sport project. She was always on hand to inspire the group and persevered when things didn’t go according to plan as she was determined to raise as much money as possible for charity.

“As a result of her improved attitude, Iqra’s attainment and effort grades have noticeably risen and she has a much more positive outlook on school life. Her organisational skills have greatly improved and teachers were able to rely on her to create action plans for the charity event and ensure they were carried out successfully; something they would not have been able to do before the project.”

Thrilled with the overall quality of entries received for the awards, Darren Campbell commented: “All of the finalists are hugely deserving of their awards. In my role as Ambassador I have seen firsthand how much of an impact Sky Sports Living for Sport is having on young people throughout the UK. It’s great to hear how these pupils’ attitudes towards both sport and education have improved and to see how teachers are helping them to into practice the skills that they have learnt which will help them to succeed in the future.

“I can’t wait to see each of the finalists pick up their awards and discover who this year’s overall Student of the Year is.”

The regional finalists will each receive a £50 sports voucher, a year’s free Sky Sports subscription for the student and school, a trophy and certificate, as well as the chance to be interviewed by a Sky Sports film crew. The school will also secure an extra visit from an athlete mentor and £500 towards their next Sky Sports Living for Sport project.

The overall Student of the Year will also receive a £100 sports voucher and his or her school will also receive an extra visit from an Athlete Mentor and £2,000 towards their school’s next Sky Sports Living for Sport project.
