Alfreton man took drugs with him for night out

AN ALFRETON man caught with an amphetamine-type drug during a night out told police intended to share it with friends.

Officers were alerted by a man who had been playing football with pals in Holywell Street car park, Chesterfield, after midnight on 29th June.

He told police Aaron Easom (21) had got out of a car and asked him if he wanted to buy any drugs.

Officers attended and Easom told them he had no drugs. They searched a car and found 10 small bags of mephedrone in the glove compartment.

“He said: ‘They are mine. I put them there. It’s M-Cat’,” Becky Mahon, prosecuting, told magistrates at Chesterfield.

Easom said he had bought the drugs for £100 from a person he would not name.

“He said he had taken the drugs out with him in case some of his mates wanted some and it back-fired on him,” added Ms Mahon.

Easom, of New Street, Alfreton, admitted possessing mephedrone with intent to supply. He had a previous conviction for damaging property.

He was ordered to do 120 hours’ unpaid work and given a 10pm-5am curfew for 10 weeks, with £85 costs.

“I am satisfied you are not a drug dealer,” said District Judge Andrew Davison, ordering that the mephedrone be destroyed.

Matt Evans, for Easom, said: “He came to Chesterfield with a group of friends for a night out and brought the drug, intending to share it with them with for no financial gain.

“He had forgotten his ID and he wasn’t allowed in bars that his friends were in so he went to the car park to meet two female friends.

“Some lads were playing football after a night out and they got talking and, as a result, police were contacted.”

Probation officer Julia Gillott said Easom was not a regular drug user, adding: “He says he hasn’t touched M-Cat since the offence.”

The court heard that Easom was currently working at Thorntons chocolate factory and was due to resume his usual work as a joiner in January.
