Alcoholic drove into the back of waiting bus

A CHRONIC alcoholic crashed in the back of bus while almost three times over the limit.

Robert Ian McFarland (46)of Kelstedge Drive, Mansfield appeared at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court charged with drink driving and fleeing the scene of an accident.

It was heard how he drove his smashed Renault Clio off after ploughing into the back of the bus on Portland Street as it waited to turn into the bus station on the afternoon of 25th February. No-one was hurt.

After turning himself into police later, he was found to have 100mg of alcohol in 100 ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mg.

Before being given a 50-day suspended sentence, probation officer Jonathan Hand said McFarland was a chronic alcoholic who had continually refused help for his addiction.
