100 arrests in Derbyshire drink-drive campaign

More than 100 drivers were arrested during the first month of Derbyshire police’s summer drink drive campaign.

The figures from June show that 460 drivers were stopped and tested with 120 testing positive, refusing or failing a breath test, which is an increase of nine arrests compared to last year.

During last year’s campaign 412 drivers were stopped and 111 of those were tested positive, refused or failed.

The number of drivers under the age of 25 who failed dropped significantly. In June 2011, 178 drivers under 25 were stopped with 71 testing positive, refusing or failing.

This year that figure fell to 51 despite the number of tests on under 25s increasing to 198.

Head of Roads Policing, Chief Inspector Steve Wilson, said: “Whilst I am disappointed that the number of drivers failing breath tests has gone up, the reduction in positive tests for younger drivers, one of our priority groups, is pleasing. Our message as ever remains simple – don’t risk lives by drinking and driving.”

The campaign, which supports the national crackdown coordinated by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), involves officers carrying out checks on roadsides to tackle those drivers who think they can drink or take drugs and then get behind a wheel.

It usually runs throughout the month of June but Derbyshire police have chosen to extend the campaign until the end of August.

Roads policing officers are working with local Safer Neighbourhood teams and Crimestoppers to spread the message that if you are celebrating any summer events with a drink then don’t drive.

Ch Insp Wilson added: “We have a busy summer of celebrations, in public life and in the sporting arena so we decided to extend the campaign. We want people to enjoy these major events with family and friends but make sure you have a designated driver who doesn’t drink at all.”
