0300 500 80 80 - the cheaper way to talk to Nottinghamshire County Council
From checking how to renew your Blue Badge disabled parking permit to registering the birth of your baby – calls to Nottinghamshire County Council about any of the 500 services available look set to be cheaper from Monday 5th November.
Next week’s Policy Committee will discuss plans for the County Council to change its customer call centre contact number to a new 0300 number – 0300 500 80 80. The current customer call centre number is 08449 80 80 80.
The 0300 code was introduced by OFCOM, the telecoms watchdog, to make it cheaper for people to contact not-for profit organisations.
The change will mean that wherever you live in Nottinghamshire, you’ll pay a local call rate to get in touch with the County Council.
Calls to 0300 numbers from landlines and mobiles are charged at the same rate as dialling a local number.
All 0300 calls are included in inclusive minutes and discount schemes offered by telecoms and mobile phone providers, meaning that some calls are even free of charge.
At the moment, the County Council uses an 0844 prefix, which costs more to phone than 0300 numbers and means callers do not benefit from inclusive minutes or discounted call plans. This is particularly the case for mobiles, with calls to 0844 numbers costing up to 41p per minute.
Coun Martin Suthers, Deputy Leader of the County Council said: “At Nottinghamshire County Council we’re all about offering value for money public services.
“The new 0300 dialling codes have been purposefully introduced to make it cheaper for people to contact their public services, with one flat call rate. It makes sense for the County Council to revise its contact number to reflect this change and to pass on the call savings to local residents.
“Our friendly, professional call centre team are based locally with many of the operators living in Nottinghamshire. They handle around 320,000 calls every year and make sure people get the right information, first time, about the 500 services we provide across the county.
“Our customer service centre is open very flexible hours - from 8am-8pm weekdays and on Saturday mornings. But if that’s not convenient, you can get in touch with us 24/7 using our website, www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk .”
Subject to Committee approval, the new 0300 number will officially go live on Monday 5th November.
Existing County Council publications and literature will be updated with the new number on a rolling basis, as they reach the end of their shelf life, to keep implementation costs to a minimum.
The County Council’s Customer Service Centre, based at Annesley Business Park near J27 of the M1, is open six days a week from 8am-8pm Monday to Friday and 9-12pm on Saturday.
